UNESCO CREATIVE CITIES OF DESIGN PUBLIC FORUM
In this public forum, representatives from UNESCO Creative Cities of Design, including Singapore, will share their efforts in designing for impact in education, public policy, businesses and communication. Participants will be able to engage with these representatives to understand how they are turning to design to add value and grow sustainably in an increasing demanding, complex and fast-changing world.
Singapore was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Design in 2015. By joining the 180-strong UNESCO Creative Cities Network, cities commit to sharing best practices, developing partnerships that promote creativity and the cultural industries, strengthening participation in cultural life and integrating culture in urban development plans.
This is a programme of Singapore Design Week 2019. As one of Asia’s premier design festivals, SDW champions design thought leadership by bringing together the design, business and public policy worlds to bring about innovation and solutions to build businesses, engage communities and enrich people’s lives. It is a hub where the best design talents and businesses from Singapore and Asia converge to be showcased to the world; and a platform where Singaporeans and visitors can experience the value of design through delightful activities.

PROGRAMME PILLAR 1: DESIGN x POLICY
TIME: 9.00AM – 10.30AM (Registration starts at 8.30am)
Policymakers adopting design approaches seek to place the ‘user’ at the heart of their solutions, and employ adaptive processes that can move with changing circumstances, creating practical everyday solutions. Participants attending Design x Policy can expect to find out how design can reconnect policies and services to everyday problems that we face.
PROGRAMME PILLAR 2: DESIGN x EDUCATION
TIME: 11.00AM – 12.20PM (Registration starts at 10.30am)
As non-design industries and governments look to design to innovate and transform their businesses, solve complex societal problems, and deliver the best possible experience for end-users, Design x Education looks at how the design education landscape has evolved to adapt to changing needs. Participants can expect to find out what it means to be trained as a designer and how a design approach can change what we think about educational environments and of practitioners.
PROGRAMME PILLAR 3: DESIGN x BUSINESS
TIME: 2.00PM – 3.20PM (Registration starts at 1.30pm)
Good design is good strategy. Companies, communities and economies are using design thinking to raise productivity, unlock new opportunities for growth, and improve the quality of everyday life. Participants attending Design x Business can expect to find out how companies have used design to catalyse innovation and competitiveness, and how businesses can reorganise to optimise ideation and innovation.
PROGRAMME PILLAR 4: DESIGN x COMMUNICATION
TIME: 3.50PM – 5.15PM (Registration starts at 3.20pm)
As companies work towards better understanding of real world behaviour, and the optimisation of technology, communication is crucial to how customers and stakeholders encounter and experience the world. Participants attending Design x Communication can expect to find out how boundaries between products, services and experiences are increasingly blurred in today’s global economy and how communication can design a seamless experience.
