About the Programme

Up to Mischief  tells of a Singapore childhood in the 1970s when people were moving from the kampongs to public housing, women were starting to go out to work, whacking with a cane was a common way of keeping mischief in check, and children were left to their own devices – not a mobile phone, a tablet or any gadget. Imagine simple joys like taking a crab for a walk, keeping chickens in a flat, fizzling ants or even searching for an escaped panther!

In capturing vignettes of her childhood, Serene hopes we will appreciate our very own stories of Singapore - not the earthshaking, political history book events but the folksy stories of individual families with its humorous and heartwarming moments. Accompanied by whimsically lively illustrations by St John V. Smith, these funny stories are for the young and young at heart, the inner child in us when new discoveries came daily!

Attached is a sample of the first two stories from Up to Mischief. Read the complete six chapter stories in the book which is available at the various NLB branches: UpToMischief_Crabby+Benny.pdf

Kindly note this session is for an adult audience.
