SEA-ME-WE 3 (2018) and Q&A with Virgile Fraisse moderated by Phoebe Pua, researcher and doctoral candidate at the National University of Singapore (NUS)

Join us for the Asian premiere of SEA-ME-WE by Virgile Fraisse (born Paris 1990).

SEA-ME-WE is a four-part film project by Fraisse which explores the impact of networked communications. Taking its name from the fibre optic cable that links Singapore and Marseille via Europe and Asia, the four films trace the entities and people affected by the cable’s networks: state governments, telecom companies, traders of cryptocurrency and migrant workers.

Set in locations along the cable’s route, the films contemplate the human relationships and commercial transactions enabled by its high-speed technology. They also highlight its potential vulnerability. In the films, viewers not only witness ruptures to SEA-ME-WE’s submarine infrastructure, but the struggles of organisations and individuals to harness its formidable technological and political power.

The fourth film—SEA-ME-WE 3—was shot in Singapore in 2018. Its team and cast include scriptwriter Dan Koh, and award-winning actress Noorlinah Mohamed.

The screening on Saturday 9 November will be followed by Q&A moderated by Phoebe Pua, researcher and doctoral candidate at the National University of Singapore.

SEA-ME-WE was made with the support of Fondation des artistes, CNC-DICRéAM, CNAP, Mécènes du Sud, Les Réalisateurs, Centre Pompidou – Hors Pistes Festival, Les Ateliers de Rennes Biennial, Karachi Biennial, Festival Marseille/Provence, Clark House Initiative and Grey Projects.

The screening is supported by the Embassy of France in Singapore and Grey Projects.
