About this event

Nestled between modern industries, a cold, rustic brick building once roaring with energy, now hides in plain sight. The world around her has transformed with time, but the time within seems to have stopped long ago as she stands, dormant, waiting to be rediscovered. This season, let the Voices of Singapore Ladies Choir take you through a world reimagined. Let our sounds transcend through the towering pillars and beams that line the Pasir Panjang Power Station, like monuments, like a testament that even she has stood the test of time.

“Sounds From A Distant World” features songs from John Rutter, César Franck and many others. Catch the world premiere of Ave Maria, an arrangement by none other than the Choir’s music director, Darius Lim. Joining the choir will be Singaporean saxophonist Samuel Phua and musicians from the Orchestra of the Music Makers.

Join us in our celebration of life. No matter how the world around us may change, our way forward is with hope, positivity and light, a light that is brightest at the end of the tunnel.

About the VOS Ladies Choir

Voices of Singapore Ladies Choir consists of semi-professional singers, musicians, teachers, as well as passionate amateurs who are eager to discover new experiences through music-making and developing a deeper understanding of the nation's cultural heritage.

The choir was formally founded in 2014 as VOCO Singapore Ladies Choir by Artistic Director Darius Lim, and has performed with Philomela (Finland), University of London Chamber Choir, The Coronation Singers, and numerous other ensembles.

In June 2016, the choir embarked on their first international European tour, where they travelled to give concerts in Amsterdam, Krakow, London (England), Great Rissington and Cardiff (Wales). During the tour, the choir was awarded the 2nd Prize in the Chamber Choir category of the 2016 Cracovia Cantans International Choir Competition in Krakow, Poland. The choir most recently received the Gold award at the 2021 World Choir Festival.

The choir joined the Voices of Singapore Choral Society at its inception in 2019 and was renamed Voices of Singapore Ladies Choir.

About Voices of Singapore

Voices of Singapore (VOS) is a not-for-profit arts organisation with a range of performance ensembles, an education wing that provides top-quality singing education through the Children’s Choir, as well as hosts the annual VOS Festival, Singapore’s largest non-competitive choral festival. With a belief that music should be made accessible to all, VOS also seeks to engage children with special needs through the Starlight Music-making Programme and Starlight Voices.

About Orchestra of the Music Makers

Founded in 2008, the Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) is a Singaporean symphony orchestra of 140 volunteer musicians. Under music director Chan Tze Law, Vice-Dean of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, OMM has established a reputation for delivering professionally executed concerts as well as engaging community outreach activities.

Musically versatile, the orchestra’s repertoire spans a wide range of musical styles, including classical works, opera, and film music. These programmes are regularly held at Singapore’s leading concert venues, and consistently draw large audiences. Beyond concerts, OMM makes music more accessible to the public through innovative programme booklets, and targeted community engagement activities.

Since its inception, OMM has established fruitful relationships within the local artistic ecosystem, collaborating with local conductors, composers, and soloists, as well as artists from beyond the music industry. The orchestra has also toured overseas and released several recordings to critical acclaim, some of which were also featured in the Singapore Airlines’ KrisWorld in-flight classical music selection.

About Samuel Phua

Hailed as “saxophone extraordinaire” by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Samuel Phua is a passionate advocate of contemporary music. In his latest recording project, he hosted a documentary ‘Musical Soundbites’ produced by the SSO which shines the spotlight on Singapore composers and demystifies the enigmatic instrument. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras and bands such as the Armenian State Symphony, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers and The Philharmonic Winds.

Aside from performing, he is a dedicated saxophone teacher and enjoys sharing his knowledge of the saxophone with students of all ages and levels in his private studio. He has served as the saxophone instructor in the International School of Music in Helsinki (2018-2020).

He is a graduate from the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, with a Bachelor of Music Degree under the tutelage of Joonatan Rautiola with the support of the Singapore National Arts Council Arts Scholarship (Undergraduate) 2017.
