Event description
Which Way is Up? by Mok Ly Yng

About this event

This workshop highlights the key concepts of orientation, direction and scale in maps: How do we tell which way is up? Did you know that North is not always up? What is the difference between large-scale and small-scale maps?

Real maps with different orientations will be shown.  Large- and small-scale maps of the same place will also be used to demonstrate the key differences between the two.

About the Speaker:

Mok Ly Yng is a map research consultant with more than 20 years’ experience in the field. He has worked in the Singapore Armed Forces Mapping Unit as well as the National Archives of Singapore. He has provided mapping consultancy to several map exhibitions, books and heritage projects and has given numerous talks.

About the Exhibition

Showcasing rare historical maps, “Mapping the World: Perspectives from Asian Cartography” brings together different mapping traditions and worldviews, political and cultural spheres of influence, and the exchange of cartographic knowledge between civilisations across the world.
