Find a comfortable, confident, and safe practice of backbends to be included in your yoga practice through this 2-week workshop.

About this event

Through the Yoga 101 series, we hope to inspire students to discover their greatest strengths and valour and help them overcome hidden fears with confidence. At the same time, let us explore the wisdom we can learn from challenging asanas and realise how yoga is far more than just poses!

Yoga is not for the flexible, it is for the willing.

In this Yoga 101 workshop, let us delve into the exploration of backbends that are deemed challenging by many.

Backbends strengthen your back, shoulders, chest, and hips, and bring your body back into balance by increasing spine flexibility and mobility. While relieving tension, tightness, and pain in the back and neck, they also help to promote good posture.

Backbends are strong, energising postures that increase blood circulation, boost vitality and reduce stress and anxiety. Gain the courage to trust yourself, break free from self-imposed limitations and gain new perspectives in backbends, opening your mind and heart to new possibilities!

Led by Joanne, we will learn different ways to prepare, modify, and progress in the practice of backbends. Preparatory poses and modifications will be provided to suit each individual so that we can enjoy the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of backbends.

At the end of 2 weeks, we aim to help individuals find a comfortable, confident, and safe practice of backbends to be included in their practice without the risk of injury from poor alignment or lack of technical knowledge.

Key highlights of the Program

- Understand the functional anatomy in backbends and how it benefits the body

- Learn how to practice a backbend safely

- Explore & learn to "let go" of backbend fears

- Improve shoulder and chest mobility to achieve flip grip

- Poses covered include basic backbends like ridge, wheel & forearm wheel; back strengthening backbends like Salabhasana (Locust)& Dhanurasana (Bow); frontal opening backbends and deeper backbends like Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (King Pigeon) and Natarajasana (King Dancer)

- Build confidence and gain awareness of your body through the safe and conscious practice of backbends.
