Couple Empowerment Programme

Marriages today have been besieged by forces that militate against the well-being of the institution of marriage and family. The sexual revolution has brought about the culture of death through promiscuity, divorce, contraceptives and abortion. This has been aggravated by the rapid advancements of modern society that are hostile to family life.

The statistics show that there has been a significant increase in divorces and that marriages are breaking apart earlier. Although there are no direct statistics on Catholic marriages, it is believed that sacramental marriages are similarly imperiled.

In 2003, the Senate of Priests had, in response to an inspiration from the ground, directed that Couple Empowerment Programme (CEP) be developed under the auspices of the Family Life Society. CEP was developed for young married couples, primarily for those married between 1-5 years but including those up to their 10th year of marriage. Among CEP’s objectives is to establish a programme for young married couples on the Church’s teachings on marriage and family, life skills and parenting at parish level and eventually establishing a formation and support centre for all couples who are serious about enhancing their marriage and family life.

This has set the groundwork for a post-marriage catechesis and support programmes for young marrieds. In September 2013, CEP’s Co-ordinators have successfully completed a Masters in Marriage and Family offered by the Maryvale Institute (in conjunction with the JP2 Institute).

It is believed that CEP is pioneering work in post marriage catechesis.
