Singapore Wind Symphony

Since its inception in 1977, the Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) has played a central role in the development of the wind music scene in Singapore. Formerly known as the National Theatre Symphony Band (NTSB), it was the earliest ensemble of its kind made up of music lovers from all walks of life - many of whom went on to become music teachers and band directors who nurture future generations of Singaporean musicians.

The SWS has won top prizes at the prestigious World Music Contest held in Krekrade (The Netherlands) in 1992 and 2001, and has been featured at numerous international festivals including the Janitsjarfestivalen in Hamar (Norway) and the Conference of the Asia Pacific Band Directors’ Association (APBDA) in Hong Kong. It has collaborated with internationally renowned musicians including Joseph Alessi (USA), Steven Mead (UK), Joe Burgstaller (USA), Steve Rosse (Australia), Li Fang Fang (China), Apo Hsu (Taiwan) and also presented concerts under the batons of celebrated wind band composers including Johan De Meij (Netherlands), Jan van der Roost (Belgium), Hardy Mertens (Netherlands) and Satoshi Yagisawa (Japan). The SWS has also been featured alongside Singaporean musical icons Dick Lee and Jeremy Monteiro, as well as prominent local artistes including Vocaluptuous, Rani Singam, Sezairi Sezali, Shun Ng, Wicked Aura and Gentle Bones.

Over the years, SWS family has fostered the creation of smaller ensembles with different musical pursuits each making unique contributions to the SWS’ overall mission. These include the SWS Youth program which aims to groom and nurture young musicians, the popular SWS City Swing which is a ‘big band’ specializing in jazz and swing music, and last but not least, the award winning SWS Percussion Ensemble which has dazzled audiences around the world with their exciting rhythms.

Under the leadership of its present music director Adrian Tan, the SWS celebrated its 35th Anniversary in 2012 and embarked on a new mission to champion and promote the music of Singaporean and Asian composer with the aim of sharing the unique and diverse musical cultures of the region with the rest of the world. Over the last 3 years, it has commissioned and premiered more than 80 original compositions and arrangements. Winning accolades locally for their innovative concert programs, such as the “Singapore A Musical Celebration” series in collaboration with the Esplanade Theatres by the Bay, the SWS has also been received enthusiastically by audiences overseas on its concert tours to Taiwan and Thailand. Perhaps more significantly, many of the newly commissioned works have not only found a place in the repertoire of local school and community bands, but have also been performed by wind bands from all over the world thereby successfully bringing Singapore music to an international audience.
