Can you imagine a world where you wake up in your 3D printed house, eat 3D printed food, and drive a 3D printed car to work? This futuristic world is well within our sight. Professor Chua Chee Kai, Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP), will explain 3D printing and its applications. Using the 5Cs format, he will discuss the many applications of 3D printing in various industries and why 3D printing is important to Singapore.

Professor Chua Chee Kai is the Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP), a $150M research centre in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore). Funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF), Economic Development Board (EDB), Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), NTU and external partners, SC3DP consolidates NTU Singapore’s existing competencies and strengths in 3D printing and spearheads Singapore’s efforts in the area.

SC3DP aims to be a world leader in 3D printing and a wellspring of knowledge by attracting leading researchers to the Centre, nurturing a skilled talent pool, establishing strong linkages with and delivering state of the art and innovative solutions to the industry. Together with a strong pool of qualified researchers and collaboration with industry partners, S3CDP extensively researches in 6 key industry sectors: Future of Manufacturing, Aerospace and Defence, Building and Construction, Marine and Offshore, Biomedical and Food and Electronics.

SC3DP has 101 active PhD students, 31 full-time researchers and 49 faculty members, making the Centre one of the largest research centres globally, and hosts 3 of the top 10 scientists in 3D printing research*. SC3DP houses more than 12 types of state-of-the art 3D printing machines in the Centre’s research laboratories, and also develops the Centre’s own new and novel 3D printers. SC3DP works with recognized Singapore partners such as ST Engineering, Sembcorp, and Keppel, and with established international companies like UL, SLM Solutions, Emerson, P&G, Bosch, Lloyd Register, Panasonic, DMG Mori, PTTGC and Evonik to improve and create innovative technologies and novel processes.

About the Speaker

Dr Chua Chee Kai is a Professor of the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and the Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He has been involved in 3D printing since 1990.

According to Web of Science, Dr Chua is the world's most published and cited researcher in 3D Printing research. Dr Chua contributed to more than 300 publications in local seminars, technical talks, international conferences, journals, books, books chapters and patents. Dr Chua has also sat on the International Programme Committee for more than 20 international conferences devoted to 3D printing, and is the immediate past chairman of the Additive Manufacturing Standards Technical Committee, which was set up to oversee the development, promotion and adoption of AM in Singapore. In addition to chairing and receiving several invitations to speak as a keynote speaker at international conferences, Dr Chua is also widely consulted on 3D printing related issues by various industries.

He is also the co-author for four books, “Rapid Prototyping: Principles & Applications in Manufacturing”, "Bioprinting: Principles and Applications", “Standards, Quality Control, and Measurement Sciences in 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing” and “Lasers in 3D Printing and Manufacturing. The 5th edition of “Rapid Prototyping: Principles & Applications in Manufacturing” was recently published in 2017 and "Bioprinting: Principles and Applications" was the first book ever published for bioprinting research.

In 2013, Dr Chua was awarded "Academic Career Award" at the 6th International Conference in Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP), Leiria, Portugal for his contributions in 3D Printing. He was also conferred the Public Administration Medal (Silver) by the President of Singapore at the 2014 National Day Awards and also received the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award in the same year.
