Yaji Winter Masterclass: Chinese Femininity in Peking Opera

The Hanfugirls Collective seek to re-examine and re-present the authentic Chinese cultural experiences and educational programmes. Focusing on female empowerment, the group's content will focus on female experiences, identity and representation in history, including concepts of Chinese femininity, role and rights of women in ancient China, courtesan narratives and of course, what fashion, make-up and accessories meant for an ancient Chinese woman.

They underwent rigorous training to the craft of the ultimate male gaze on Chinese women. Modern period dramas stylings and representation of Chinese femininity often revolve around these archetypes built by men in Chinese Opera a few centuries ago.In this workshop, we invite a female Peking Opera master, Tian Ping, to guide us on a transformative journey in becoming that ideal Chinese lady because we think that female representation is important in this once male-dominated industry.Not only will you learn the basic etiquettes of being a well-groomed lady from respectable Chinese family, how she should walk, sit, dress and sip her tea, you will also try your feet at wearing the three-inch lotus shoes adapted for Peking Opera performance, and balancing yourself off the Manchurian platform shoes. You will attempt at imitating the gentle gait of both ladies of the Manchurian-Chinese court, and that of the Han ladies in the depth of their boudoirs. 大师课程：京剧旦角养成记导师：田平语言：双语（中文为主讲语言）当代社会和早期电视剧对传统社会女性的演绎很大程度受到了戏曲的影响。满人入关，执行了剃发易服，意图让汉人穿上满人的服饰、学习满人的礼仪等。然而女性和戏曲穿着却保留了明朝和之前的形制并延续了传统社会对中国女性的审美和仪态要求。碍于女性不得抛头露面，所有女性的演绎便均为男性代表。作为一个男人要如何变得婀娜多姿，那便是十分考功夫的事情。本期大师课程，京剧大师田平老师将通过旦角的塑造和刻画，手把手地教你如何从一个都市小白秒穿越成一名大家闺秀。从服装、仪态、礼仪着手，你将会学习到一名大家闺秀该有的坐姿、行走步伐、服饰搭配等知识。你甚至还能学习如何用清朝的高跟鞋（满人的花盆鞋）和戏曲的三寸金莲搭配马面裙行走出轻巧、优雅的步伐。ABOUTTian PingProfessionally trained in Beijing Opera since the age of 10, Tian Ping graduated from the National Academy of ChineseTheatre Arts and became the winner of the CCTV Screen Award in the same year. She has been based in Singapore since 1993, and spent over 20 years performing, teaching and promoting Beijing Opera across South East Asia. Ping believes that traditional art is not stagnant but constantly evolves with time and she is deeply passionate about seeking new ideas and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Some of her recent works include partnering with producer Danny Yung to fuse Beijing Opera with Javanese dance, a performance featured at last years’ Singapore International Art, as well as mixing Beijing Opera with Chinese music in a joint concert with Singapore Chinese Orchestra.Ping also spent 12 years of teaching at NAFA, and is a frequent speaker at communities, schools and institutions. including NTU Confucius Institute and National Arts Council. She is excited to partner with CulturedGen on “Operatic Identities” to give Beijing Opera a modern spin while adding depth to the art of interactive performance.田平10岁考入天津戏曲学校接受专业京剧演员全方面培养，后又考入中国戏曲学院表演系教师专业继续深造。移民新加坡二十多年来，致力于推广传播京剧，在新加坡各中小学及国际学校任教，义务为本地业余京剧社团导演大型剧目，并到会馆做戏曲讲座。在南洋艺术学院戏剧系任客卿讲师12年之久。2011年举办了《京腔京韵》田平个人专场演出，也多次与新加坡华乐团合作演出并策划《京剧荟萃》。2016年她创办了《轻叩京剧大门～田平说戏》，边演边讲解并赴马国吉隆坡演出，深受观众好评。近几年她尝试突破传统艺术框架，参加新加坡国际艺术节把京剧注入印尼传统舞蹈中，并受艺理会之邀做了专题讲座《戏曲韵与律》。2018年4月赴马来西亚槟城用京剧音乐元素做跨界演唱。2019年与CulturedGen合作突破京剧传统表演形式，开创了一条京剧体验的快闪活动。Hanfugirls Collective (Since 2019)Hanfugirls Collective is an all-female arts collective focusing on research, education and outreach of ancient Chinese artforms with a strong emphasis on female empowerment and multiculturalism. The collective has completed an arts residency at the Stamford Arts Centre in 2019 where the collective conducted sold-out lectures, workshops and immersive performances related to ancient Chinese courtesans and their artistic legacies as well as the interconnectedness of ancient civilisations and cultures since thousands of years ago as manifested in their fashion and arts.In the Traditional Arts Residency under the National Arts Council that followed in 2021, the Collective completed the first interactive historical dance film that combined traditional film medium with choose-your-own-path online interactives with a 360-degree dance video as part of the residency. With a strong focus on research, the collective seeks to challenge stereotypes and misunderstandings about women identity in ancient Chinese narratives, and to emphasise the confidence and independence displayed by Chinese women throughout history contrary to the usual assumptions of them being submissive and weak.
