Yaji Winter Experience: The Speakeasy Event

The Hanfugirls Collective seek to re-examine and re-present the authentic Chinese cultural experiences and educational programmes. Focusing on female empowerment, the group's content will focus on female experiences, identity and representation in history, including concepts of Chinese femininity, role and rights of women in ancient China, courtesan narratives and of course, what fashion, make-up and accessories meant for an ancient Chinese woman.

We imagine a world where the Chinese Manchurian monarchs of Qing imperial China successfully transited into a constitutional monarchy system, where certain traditions are kept fresh while fusing with the western modernity. In this parallel universe, you will meet the alter-egos of some historical figures who are knowledgeable in historical fashion, tea, performing arts and of course, imperial gossips. After all, a speakeasy event is always filled with gossips about the who’s who. Yes, Tatler-worthy gossips of the last century.You may choose which character(s) to converse with, while nibbling off some traditional Chinese snacks which might be quite jarring for your modern sensibility and expectation.Come prepared with your bespoke dress/party wear, and let your alter-ego shine in this parallel universe where history is being rewritten based on our own imagination.Early Bird Special (Now till 15 Dec 2022):$98Usual Price(16 Dec 2022 to 28 Jan 2023): $128At the Door (29 Jan 2023): $148ABOUTHanfugirls Collective (Since 2019)Hanfugirls Collective is an all-female arts collective focusing on research, education and outreach of ancient Chinese artforms with a strong emphasis on female empowerment and multiculturalism. The collective has completed an arts residency at the Stamford Arts Centre in 2019 where the collective conducted sold-out lectures, workshops and immersive performances related to ancient Chinese courtesans and their artistic legacies as well as the interconnectedness of ancient civilisations and cultures since thousands of years ago as manifested in their fashion and arts.In the Traditional Arts Residency under the National Arts Council that followed in 2021, the Collective completed the first interactive historical dance film that combined traditional film medium with choose-your-own-path online interactives with a 360-degree dance video as part of the residency. With a strong focus on research, the collective seeks to challenge stereotypes and misunderstandings about women identity in ancient Chinese narratives, and to emphasise the confidence and independence displayed by Chinese women throughout history contrary to the usual assumptions of them being submissive and weak.
