Yaji Winter Masterclass: Omakase with the  Empress Dowager

The Hanfugirls Collective seek to re-examine and re-present the authentic Chinese cultural experiences and educational programmes. Focusing on female empowerment, the group's content will focus on female experiences, identity and representation in history, including concepts of Chinese femininity, role and rights of women in ancient China, courtesan narratives and of course, what fashion, make-up and accessories meant for an ancient Chinese woman.

In case you think that the royalties, being Manchurians, would have their dishes served in Manchurian style, this session will show you the differences between the Manchurian imperial cuisine and the typical Manchurian cuisine.Not only would you get to learn about the preferences of the Empress Dowager, you would even get to taste some of them! Trained as a dietician with a masters in Psychiatry, Yih Shian has a sound knowledge of humans and our relationships with food. She marries her professional expertise as a health and wellness consultant with her passion in historical food recipes and founded Her Heartefact, a brand that focuses on adapting food recipes in ancient records with a modern twist.With an extensive research and knowledge in medieval Chinese recipes and the evolution of Chinese consumption habits, Yih Shian seeks to re-introduce the subtle flavours of the past to our over-stimulated modern palettes.S﻿he had re-created snacks and drinks from the Song dynasty (11-13th century) for the inaugural Yaji Autumn edition, and will be incorporating dining etiquette and Qing dynasty food in the upcoming Yaji Winter.Hanfugirls Collective (Since 2019)Hanfugirls Collective is an all-female arts collective focusing on research, education and outreach of ancient Chinese artforms with a strong emphasis on female empowerment and multiculturalism. The collective has completed an arts residency at the Stamford Arts Centre in 2019 where the collective conducted sold-out lectures, workshops and immersive performances related to ancient Chinese courtesans and their artistic legacies as well as the interconnectedness of ancient civilisations and cultures since thousands of years ago as manifested in their fashion and arts.In the Traditional Arts Residency under the National Arts Council that followed in 2021, the Collective completed the first interactive historical dance film that combined traditional film medium with choose-your-own-path online interactives with a 360-degree dance video as part of the residency. With a strong focus on research, the collective seeks to challenge stereotypes and misunderstandings about women identity in ancient Chinese narratives, and to emphasise the confidence and independence displayed by Chinese women throughout history contrary to the usual assumptions of them being submissive and weak.
