<h2>Program Details</h2><p>新印象 -- "Le's Singapore Impression (2022)" is Chen Le's latest eight-movement work written for Pipa &amp; Piano. These eight songs are named after local features, taking inspiration from composer's sixteen years' living on the little red dot.  </p><p>"Merlion's dream" is a melodious prelude which introduces the scene; bringing the audience to a place of serenity, a place where it all began.  </p><p>"A city in the garden" is written in five, expressing a sense of constant change &amp; an urge to develop. It reflects the changing aspects of modern Singapore. </p><p>"Sayang!" is a love song inspired by the Chopin's Waltz, blending the quality of east-west music to create something original and refreshing.</p><p>"Rojaked" uses a combined time-signature of 7/8 and 4/4 together with conflicting dynamics and tonalities, showcasing the beauty of differences within. </p><p>"Kiasuism" is a battle between Piano and Pipa. Extended techniques are explored in this piece, and a living sense of rhythm is present throughout. Imitating conversations between instruments instil a sense of mockery, uproar &amp; restoration. </p><p>"Homage to LKY" is an Adagio with a hymn like chorus ushering emotions of pride, joy and repatriation.    </p><p>"The Monsoon" a percussive movement which describes shapes (characters) of the rain, concluded with a cadenza recitative.</p><p>"Citizen of the globe" is atonal and futuristic fantasia, searching for a new constant among the chaos. Here we explore the comforts and controversy of globalization and its impact within Singapore.</p><p></p><p>"新印象 -- Singapore Impressions (2022)" 是陈乐为琵琶钢琴创作的八乐章作品。这八首歌是以本地特色命名的，灵感来自作曲家在小红点上生活的十六年。</p><p>“美狮的梦想”是一个悠扬的序曲；把观众带到一个宁静，一切开始的地方。</p><p>“花园中的城市”用五拍子的节奏表达了一种不断变化的感觉和发展的冲动。它反映了现代新加坡变化的一面。</p><p>"亲爱的! "是一首情歌，灵感来源于肖邦的华尔兹舞曲，融合了东西方音乐的品质，取其独到之处和清新感。</p><p>“Rojaked”使用了7/8和4/4的混合节拍以及相互冲突的动态和调性，展示了人性内在差异的美。</p><p>“Kiasuism”是钢琴和琵琶之间的一场Battle。本曲对Extended Techniques进行了探讨。乐器之间的相互模仿和对话，使人产生一种嘲弄、喧闹和平复感。</p><p>“对李先生的敬意”是一首赞美诗般的柔板，伴随着骄傲、喜乐和追溯的情感。</p><p>“季侯风”用琵琶声描述雨的形状和性格，结尾又是一段华彩的独白。</p><p>“全球公民”是一个无调性和未来主义的幻想，强烈的调性变化和强弱对比在变迁中寻找新的定数，探索全球化的舒适度和争议性，以及其对新加坡的影响。</p>

<h2>About the Composer/Pianist </h2><p>Chen Le is a composer &amp; pianist based in Singapore; he studied under the tutelage of Mr. Benjamin Loh &amp; Dr. John Sharpley at the Lasalle College of the Arts, obtaining a Bmus Hons Degree in Piano Performance.</p><p>He was the principal instructor of the piano faculty at Edvox Music School &amp; awarded membership from COMPASS (Composer Authors Society of Singapore) in 2021. He has been an artistic spokesperson for HST &amp; Bespoke Jeans since 2019.</p><p>His recent recording are Chopin's Twelve Etudes, Op.10 at Esplanade, May 2022.</p><p>2021 premieres include the ‘Circuit is Breaking(2020)’ a song cycle for voice and piano written during Singapore's lockdown &amp; the ‘Art of Action In Piano Performance ~ A Composer Pianist Masterclass’ at Esplanade for the Singapore International Piano Festival.</p><p>He was invited to adjudicate as part of the jury for the Kadenza 2020 Instrumental</p><p>Competition &amp; Singapore International Music Festival at Aliwal Arts Centre &amp; Singapore</p><p>Drama Centre. His ‘12 Violin Pieces(2020)’ &amp; ‘Planet Earth Song Cycle: 行星地球之歌</p><p>(2019)’ premiered at Esplanade &amp; St. Paul's Church in 2020.He featured in a Vitalityhealth &amp; Edufest online series focused on the benefits of music education, traits of the industry &amp; personal reflections. <h2>About the Pipaist </h2><p>Yan Yu was born in Beijing, she was admitted to the Primary School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music at the age of ten. She majored in Pipa until graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music with a bachelor's degree of music . During the school, he successively studied under Liu Guilian, Kuang Yuzhong, Li Guanghua and Hao Yifan, and was also instructed by Li Guangzu. After graduation, she was invited by Dr. Tay Teow Kiat from Singapore to teach at the Shangyin Music Center in Singapore, and also served as the music adviser of the Lion City Chinese Orchestra. She once held the "Yan Yu Pipa Solo Concert". <h2>About the Special Guest</h2><p>JOHN SHARPLEY possesses a unique and multi-faceted career that spans geographic and cultural borders. He is a composer, pianist, teacher, and writer with a Doctorate in Music Composition from Boston University; a Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Houston; and music diplomas from the National Conservatory of Music in Strasbourg, France. </p><p>He is often featured in concerts and festivals world-wide: recently including Kyoto City University of the Arts, the Australasian Piano Pedagogy Symposium (Melbourne), Illinois Wesleyan University, the Texas Music Teachers Association Convention, Across Oceans International Festival (Toronto), the Hong Kong Asian Arts Festival, multiple Asian Composers League Festivals, Universe of Sound (Singapore), and Our Music Foundation Nepal in Kathmandu.</p><p>Honors include the Texas Music Teachers Association Composition Prize, an American Cine-Eagle Award and a New York Film Festival Award, a citation from Stanford University (USA) in recognition of his contributions as a teacher and a composer-in-residency with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.</p><p>Sharpley&#x27;s compositions include orchestral works, opera, music for theatre, film and dance scores, chamber music, songs, and solo piano works. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg (Russia) Philharmonic, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic, the Sheffield Winds (Chicago), the T’ang String Quartet, the Young Voices of Melbourne, the Taipei Chamber Singers, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and Bridges Collective (Melbourne) are some of the prominent ensembles that have performed and recorded Sharpley&#x27;s compositions. He also collaborated with the famed rock group R.E.M., composing an arrangement for the song Lotus available on their album “Up”.  His work, “Creation” was commissioned by and to be premiered by the Nanyang Collective at the Esplanade on 10 February 2023.
