About this Programme

This talk will explore underwater sound and why it is a window into the global ocean, which covers 70% of Earth's surface area. Sounds can help us understand the ocean in multiple aspects, including its biodiversity, resources, and physical properties. It also reveals insights into the ocean's interaction with land masses, other water bodies, and polar glaciers, which are currently melting at an accelerated rate under the effect of climate change and leading to sea level rise, sound is therefore a tool to understand our ocean's health, and moving forward, how we can sustainably use our ocean. Join us to HEAR more!

This programme is targetted at adults, including those aged 50 and above.

Please note:

This programme will also be livestreamed via Zoom. Participants who wish to attend online should sign up for a Zoom ticket. Participants who wish to attend onsite should sign up for a Standard ticket.

Please note that presentation slides may be available during or after the programme, depending on the programme. Where applicable, only participants who attend the programme can have access to the slides via instructions given during the programme.

About the Speaker

Hari is a Senior Research Fellow at NUS working on underwater sound processing and machine learning. These techniques are used in a range of underwater applications from biodiversity or defense-related scenarios in shallow tropical waters infested with snapping shrimp noise, to polar ice sheets where glacier melt noise dominates the soundscape. From 2019, Hari is focusing on the acoustics of melting ice. He undertook field campaigns in 2023 to Svalbard and 2024 to Antarctica to study this problem, and was a Visiting Postdoctoral fellow at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography during 2019-2021. Hari also researches machine-learning based quantification of marine mammals in Singapore waters. He is the Chief Editor of the Science communication and outreach magazine IEEE Earthzine and serves on the IEEE Oceanic Engineering society Executive committee. In 2019, he was awarded the IEEE OES YP-BOOST award which aims to encourage young professionals to participate in the society leadership. He is helping with OES efforts on the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences, and is the chair of the Singapore AUV Challenge, the largest underwater robotics competition in Asia.
