Synopsis

Odds are often stacked against retail investors when it comes to stock-picking. In fact, over 700 counters in Singapore Exchange (“SGX”), stock-picking can tantamount to picking out needles in the hay. The difficulty further compounds when retail investors try to produce superior returns consistently.

A myriad of reasons contributes to the challenges for retail investors: Small capital base, Costs, ability to Diversify and Lack of information.

Speaker

 Mr Martin Chong, Director, Portfolio Management, Phillip Capital Management

Martin is the Director, Portfolio Management (Business Development) at Phillip Capital Management (S) Ltd. Together with the management team; he covers the group’s business development and facilitates alliances among the institutional channels in the region. During his tenure with Phillip Capital Management (S) Ltd, he was involved in launching three ETFs of which two were REIT ETFs in Singapore since 2016. He also a board member of an SGX listed (Caltalist) company

Martin started his career with Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Malaysia in 1998 and moved up the corporate ladders subsequently. Before joining the company, he was with a UK fund management firm as a Senior Vice President in charge of business development in the Far East region. His career in sales team management spans asset management, agency development, fund platforms, and online fund distribution.

He holds a degree in BSc. Agri‐business (Hons) from Universiti Putra Malaysia. With more than 20 years’ experience, specialising in business development in the financial services industry; he has an in‐depth understanding of the Asian and ASEAN fund management industry.
