<h1>AFCC 2022 WORKSHOPS</h1><h3></h3><h2>Don't Forget to Laugh: Finding and Using Humour in Children's Literature </h2>Date: 26 May 2022 (Thu)Time: 1.30pm - 3pm (SGT)Featuring: Angela Chng, Elizabeth Chua Format: In-person* Venue: National Library Building Humour develops from an early age and has an impact on the various areas of development of a child. Humour can be used to provide an entryway for children to understand the world around them, and is a way of socialisation, providing opportunities for shared moments to connect and develop positive relationships. Research has shown that the use of humour by a teacher can increase the joy for learning in students. In this 1.5-hour workshop, we will look at the correlation between humour and child development and specifically consider the use of humour within children’s picture books to nurture their development.*Please note that participants will need to be fully vaccinated in order to attend in-person sessions.About the Facilitators Angela Chng completed her Early Childhood qualifications in Singapore and Australia. She has been a teacher and leader for over 18 years. She had been a lead teacher at Mia Mia Child and Family Study Centre, an internationally renowned demonstration school in Macquarie University, Sydney and is currently the Manager for Curriculum and Research at Pre-School By-The-Park. Living and working in Singapore and Australia, she views her work with children, families and professionals through a bicultural lens. Through her publications and presentations, Angela continues to advocate for the Early Childhood sector and challenges perspectives of children and childhood.Elizabeth Chua has been in the sector for seven years and holds a degree qualification in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College. She journeyed professionally from a classroom teacher, a mentor teacher to centre leadership in the first child study centre in Singapore, The Caterpillar’s Cove Child Study and Development Centre. Elizabeth is currently a centre leader at Pre-School By-The-Park. She has presented locally, sharing insights from her classroom and leadership. She believes that instilling a passion for literature in young children is a pathway into education and an opportunity to be exposed to other worlds of meaning-making.

<h2>சேர்ந்து உருவாக்கலாம்! - குழந்தைகளுக்கான படப் புத்தகங்கள்</h2><h2>Let's Create Together! - Children's Board Books </h2>Date: 28 May (Sat)Time: 1pm - 2.30pm (SGT)Featuring: Abhi KrishFormat: In-person*Venue: National Library Building குழந்தைகளுக்கான படப் புத்தகங்களை எழுத உங்களுக்கு ஆசையாக இருக்கிறதா? எழுத்தாளர் அபி க்ரிஷ் படங்களை மையமாகக் கொண்டு குழந்தைகளை சிரிக்கவும் சிந்திக்கவும் வைக்கும் பாடல்களை எப்படி எழுதுவது என்று இந்த பட்டறையில் கற்றுத் தருவார். அவர்களின் பெயரையும் பிடித்த விஷயங்களையும் பாடல் வரிகளுடன் கோர்த்து எழுத உதவுவார். புத்தகங்களை உருவாக்கும் முறையைப் பற்றியும் அவர் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வார். Join author Abhi Krish in this hands-on session where you will create your very own board book of original Tamil nursery rhymes! Using visuals as inspiration, learn to craft fun stories and express them through catchy rhymes and songs. You can even personalise the text to include your child’s name and interests! Get a sneak peek too into the publishing process and what it takes to bring your ideas into print.This session is conducted in Tamil. *Please note that participants will need to be fully vaccinated in order to attend in-person sessions.About the FacilitatorAbhi Krish is the founder of Nool Monsters—a bilingual platform sharing contemporary stories, songs, and approaches for children to learn Tamil playfully. Through laughter, music, and utter silliness, she’s raising a generation of wee magical guardians who will protect and usher their mother tongue into the future.

<h1>Be in the Know: Buying and Selling Translation Rights</h1>Date: 28 May 2022 (Sat)Time: 5.30pm - 7pm (SGT)Featuring: Lawrence SchimelFormat: VirtualVenue: OnlineIn this workshop, veteran writer, translator and editor Lawrence Schimel will guide participants on the art of the buying and selling translation rights to children’s books, covering negotiating contracts, building networks of rights sellers and buyers, sublicenses, and more. About the FacilitatorLawrence Schimel lives in Madrid, Spain and writes in both Spanish and English. He has published over 120 books in a wide range of genres. He is also a prolific literary translator. His translations into Spanish include the graphic novel They Called Us Enemy by George Takei; his translations into English include the middle grade novels The Wild Book by Juan Villoro and The Treasure of Barracuda by Llanos Campos. He has sold his children's books Early One Morning and Bedtime, Not Playtime! illustrated by Elina Braslina in 35 editions in 27 languages so far.

<h2>Effective Marketing through Social Media</h2>Date: 29 May 2022 (Sun)Time: 9.30am - 10.30am (SGT)Featuring: Rachael McDiarmidFormat: In-personVenue: Imagination RoomIn this workshop, marketing expert Rachael McDiarmid will share pointers on how to use popular social media to effectively market your books. What are some of the best ways you can start conversations with your readers? She will discuss the intricacies of the various platforms and how to plan your marketing strategies accordingly.About the FacilitatorsRachael McDiarmid has more than 30 years experience in publishing in Australia, in a variety of product, sales, marketing and senior management roles. She has worked with trade distributor Inbooks, as well as James Bennett/Nielsen Bookdata, Blackwell Book Services and Baker &amp; Taylor. She now runs RM Marketing Services, providing outsourcing sales and marketing solutions for publishers. A common thread has been helping publishers present and market their books through better book metadata. She teaches book marketing and sales at the University of Sydney.

<h2>Social-Emotional Learning with Giant Pandas Kai Kai, Jia Jia &amp; Le Le</h2>Date: 29 May 2022 (Sun)Time: 12.30pm - 2pm (SGT)Featuring: Angeline Ho, Karen Chin Format: VirtualVenue: OnlineSocial-emotional learning can be challenging for educators and parents to facilitate. In this webinar, we will explore hands-on activities that encourage children to develop greater self-awareness and practise life skills such as communication and perspective taking. These activities are inspired by our well-loved panda family, and they also offer opportunities for preschools and families to experiment with sustainable art.About the FacilitatorsAngeline Ho was in the early childhood industry for eight years before joining the Education team at Mandai Wildlife Group. She continues her passion in engaging young children, educators and families by designing meaningful wildlife experiences for all ages.Karen Chin is responsible for the conceptualisation of workshops and resources for educators, school students and families at Mandai Wildlife Group. She possesses 15 years of experience in promoting family learning in wildlife parks and museums.
