Singapore – INSTINC is pleased to present "All that is Changing", an exhibition of artworks by Feb 2017 artist-in-residence Jo Darvall from Fremantle, Western Australia, and in collaboration with INSTINC’s founder and contemporary abstract artist Yeo Shih Yun.
The 2 artists will collaborate to create a site-specific installation featuring large scale 2D work – including one stretching 4.8 metres, resembling a Chinese scroll, and video projection, which will be exhibited at the Australian High Commission in Singapore in March.
The inter-country collaboration is an homage to two artists - Australian Kathleen O’Connor and Chinese-born Singaporean Georgette Chen - who bucked expectations to work as artists in the early part of the 20th century and arenow considered significant artists in their countries of origin. This exhibition seeks to illuminate the histories and contributions of these two artists. New works by Darvall and Yeo will reference the kind of mark making and use of pigment observed in the work of both O’Connor and Chen.
“It’s a chance to honour what has come before,” says Jo Darvall, who continues her preoccupation with the work of Kathleen O’Connor for this exhibition. “As well as celebrating these heroic pre-war artists, the work is about our attitude to change, and our preoccupation with the new.”
