About this Event

Every object on earth is formed with one or more of these elements — line, colour and shape. For your young ones starting to find their way about the world, this course is the perfect foundation for them! We’ll learn about the beautiful vibrant shades that colour our landscape, delve into the lines that form everyday objects, and use shapes to create our own little masterpiece. These lessons will feature adorable activity sheets drawn by Portugal-based illustrator Marta Calado. Children aged 4 and above, and those with no experience in art are more than welcome!

Lesson 1: Colour

At every turn, our world is full of colour. Gaze out of your window at the vivid sunset with its purples and oranges. Stroll through your park filled with flourishing, leafy greens. Have you ever wondered how these colours are created on a canvas? By mixing paints together, we’re going to learn to create a colour wheel with these vibrant shades! We’ll take a look at Mark Rothko’s huge abstract paintings, which make you feel as though you’re surrounded by myriad shapes and colours. In examining how his art uses big blocks of oranges, blues and pinks to convey emotion, it’ll soon be your turn to pick up your brush. Express your feelings with any colour you can think of. Dive into the rainbow and let the paint flow!

Lesson 2: Line

Lines, squares and rectangles. Who would’ve thought these could express music and movement? Well, Piet Mondrian did. Full of lines and blocks of colour, this Dutch artist's iconic style articulates even his love of dancing! With just cardboard and masking tape, we’ll be creating our own collograph print full of shapes, lines and colour. A collograph print is formed from a large printmaking plate with various textures, and it’ll produce an abstract art piece that is uniquely yours. As we learn more about lines of all sizes and discover how they meld together to form different shapes, we’ll realise lines aren’t just static. They can sing, dance and groove, just like Piet Mondrian’s abstract masterpieces!

Lesson 3: Shape

What do you think of when you imagine a tree? A thick brown trunk stretching to the sky, with a canopy of green leaves? The tree we’ll be looking at in this lesson has swirling, twirling branches, a golden-brown trunk, and it contains shapes of all sizes! This is Gustav Klimt’s Tree of Life, which is filled with a wacky collage of oblong circles, wavy patterns and shiny colours. Born in Austria, Klimt is a famous artist renowned for his decorative style of repeating shapes, lines and colours. In this lesson, we’ll create a collage of different shapes and materials to form our own tree. The result — a quirky, ornamental piece of nature! Jazz it up with some sequins and gold paint, and you’ve got yourself a tree straight from your imagination.
