As someone who has suffered from chronic back pain since 2011 due to an accident while traveling, there’s no better person out there to speak from personal experience, than our own co-director, Julie Moksim. Julie has spent a greater part of a decade exploring the causes and the patterns that result in persistent back pain, as well as holistic pain management tools that have helped her to live fulfilling life. This session will be broken up into segments addressing pain relief as well as pain management.

Back pain is often the result of patterns that we create when certain muscles in the body are recruited to protect the site of injury, or as a result of daily sedentary or overuse habits. We will identify common muscles that, when overused or underused, create tension that we collectively define as back pain, such as the psoas, the glutes or the erector muscles of the spine as well as muscles that connect the legs to the back. You will gain an understanding of what these muscles do, and how they function when the body is out of balance. We will then explore simple strength and stretching exercises that can help to reduce the intensity of the pain.

It is common for those who suffer from back pain to go through periods where the pain is significantly reduced, only to do something seemingly insignificant one day that brings reinforces the pain all over again. Management of the ups and downs of back pain is a key factor in living a fulfilling life, even in the presence of pain. You will be introduced to some simple pain management tools incorporating breath and somatic movement. We will also explore things that you CAN do to maintain physical health even in the presence of pain.
