In the early 20th century, no one in his right sense would by a house sitting on a former graveyard, let alone a grave. The taboo of death and graveyards didn’t get on too well. This went on, almost to the end of the century. Most of us remember too well the ghost stories that haunted Bishan, and especially the Bishan MRT station.
When news broke that Kampong San Teng will be developed into Bishan HDB Estate, it was met with skepticism. Many swore that they would never “sleep on top of a grave”. But years earlier, in 1958, Mr. Tang Choon Keng had already proven that if one treads the right route, being near a former graveyard isn’t so bad.
Mr. Tang Choon Keng, went on to become the wealthy boss and owner of “CK Tang” which once co-existed next door to a former Teochew graveyard (which is now the illustrious Ngee Ann City). Yes – Ngee Ann Building is sitting on what was once a Teochew Cemetery.
As History would have it, ghosts or no ghost, Bishan is now a much sought after location where HDB housing is concerned. Indeed, Bishan has sold several HDB flats for more than $1 million! The rural landscape, complete with villages and graveyards are gone. Bishan’s history and heritage trail is an amazing one!
On our tour, we’ll explore and discuss how the tables were turned in favor for the graveyards. We’ll trace and explore Bishan’s success. Bidadari and Bukit Brown will soon take the route of Bishan. Will Bidadari and Bukit Brown be as successful as Bishan?
