NUS Museum is proud to present the launch of Boundless Spirit: The Art and Writings of Tan Joo Jong This landmark 300-page bilingual publication illuminates the extraordinary yet brief career of Tan Joo Jong (陈有勇, 1951–1984)—a rare polymath who excelled as both artist and writer, practitioner and theorist.

This is the first major survey of Tan’s career and intellectual contributions. In tracing his artistic development and writings, the book also examines their contexts to on-going discussions and artistic practices in Singapore during the 1970s and early 1980s. These inroads further enrich the Museum’s own holdings—such as the Singapore Art and Chinese Ink collections, which include paintings and calligraphies from the former Nanyang University’s Lee Kong Chian Museum and the University of Malaya Art Gallery.

This launch is held in conjunction with the exhibition Unfettered Brush: The Art and Writings of Tan Joo Jong (1 September 2024 – 31 December 2025), made possible with the support and loan of artworks from collector Tan Guee Pang.

The publication will be on sale at a special launch price during the event.
