This is one of the most endearing cemeteries in Singapore. It is far from spooky, and indeed, if seen in the right colors, it is one of the most pleasant cemeteries for a weekend walk. While it may seem like an old cemetery, in reality it isn’t exactly very old.
The last burial was done only in 1973. In the last decade, Bukit Brown Cemetery has somehow evolved into a fashionable place to walk your dog, take a weekend jog, or simply kill some time. Even the cyclists and the casual adventurous have made their way here.
Today, I will take you on a tour harking back to as far as 1850, and we’ll include a true story of how the super-rich made their money - and how their descendants lost it all. The “unfortunate” death of pauper Low Nong Nong is seldom told, but I will tell it in its full length. You will appreciate the great length our fore-fathers went through to build our country.
We’ll “meet” some of the very rich, but we’ll also meet many of the very poor - at Paupers’ Hill. Bukit Brown is a collection of little hills and knolls that hold a lot of history and some stories seldom told… We’ll go through some of them. The pleasant rustic quiet atmosphere is an added bonus.
We meet at Marymount MRT at 08.30am on the 3rd August 2025, Exit A, street level. This tour ends at about 12pm, maybe 12.30.
