Can Every Mathematical Problem Be Solved?

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is a university-level research institute.The mission of the Institute is to foster mathematical research, both fundamental and multidisciplinary, in particular, research that links mathematics to other disciplines, to nurture the growth of mathematical expertise among research scientists, to train talent for research in the mathematical sciences, and to serve as a platform for research interaction between the scientific community in Singapore and the wider international community.As part of its outreach program, the Institute organizes public lectures to raise public awareness and understanding of the role of mathematics in science, engineering, technology and industry, and to encourage talented students in the study of mathematics leading to the pursuit of careers in research in the mathematical sciences.

About the talk
There are many open problems in mathematics, and from time to time, a famous open problem is solved (a good example of this is Fermat’s last theorem). Should we expect that every open problem will eventually be solved? Gödel’s incompleteness theorem says that every rich enough mathematical system contains a problem that cannot be settled in the given system. Does that mean that there are problems that are inherently unsolvable? These are the issues that we shall explore in this talk, which will be accessible to a wider audience.
 
About the speaker
Menachem Magidor is professor of mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. He specializes in mathematical logic, in particular in set theory and the application of logic to artificial intelligence.  He served as the president of the Hebrew University (1997–2009) and as the president of the Association of Symbolic Logic (1996–1998).  He is currently the president of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology.

Getting here by car - Use Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). Get out at Exit 8 (North/South Buona Vista Road / National University Hospital). - Drive along Lower Kent Ridge Road. You will drive past National University Hospital and the Faculty of Dentistry building along the way. - If you need to park, turn right into Car Park 10 (Visitors). Carpark charges costs $0.0214 per minute.  - If you do not need to park, turn left into Science Drive 1. 
 
Getting here by MRT (East-West line): - Alight at Buona Vista station. - Cross the road to the bus-stop in front of the Ministry of Education.  - Transfer to public bus SBS 95. Alight at the bus-stop in front of LT27 (Lim Seng Tjoe). Walk to LT31 which is in another building, S16 Level 3 (refer to google map link). 
 
Getting here by MRT (Circle line): - Alight at Kent Ridge station. - At the bus-stop in front of NUH, transfer to internal shuttle bus A1 or D2 (all free of charge) - Alight at the bus stop for LT27. Walk to LT31 which is in another building, S16 Level 3 (refer to google map link).
