About this event

Join us for a leisurely two-hour walk in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, a historic area that has a rich past and a diverse culture. This Chinatown walk is tip-based. On average, people have been tipping our knowledgeable tour guides between RM40 and RM60 per person.

Our licensed tourist guides will share fascinating stories about Chinatown’s heritage. You’ll hear about people who lived there in the past and those who live there now, many of whom are keeping alive traditional trades and crafts.

We’ll show you the pre-war shophouses with their original facades and numerous eateries that you can check out later yourselves. Chinatown is not only known for its traditional food; you can also find flavourful fusion dishes that are a blend of Asian and Western cuisines.

The area is now a popular hub for trendy, modern cafés, bars and restaurants. There are numerous rejuvenation projects in Chinatown and many colourful murals that depict the people and character of the area past and present.

Our walks are interactive; traders are happy to stop and chat with participants. Young participants are most welcome; we always take care to engage with the young people joining us. To prepare for the walk, please read the FAQs.

You can also watch a video of the Chinatown walk here.

We specialise in tip-based walking tours in the old areas of Kuala Lumpur. Currently we run two different heritage walks and will be adding more trails in 2024. The walks come under the banner of our privately supported initiative, Keeping Kuala Lumpur's Heritage Alive. We also conduct private walks upon request and charge a professional fee.

Every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday morning, one of our trained and licensed tourist guide conducts a walk through the streets, lanes, and back alleys of Kuala Lumpur and tells participants stories about the city’s past and present. The tourist guides talk about the origins of Kuala Lumpur and how and why people migrated to the city. They tell tales of past heroes and villains, forgotten pioneers, Kuala Lumpur’s historic architecture, and much more. Our tourist guides are eager to share their love for, and knowledge of, Kuala Lumpur. They are passionate about preserving the memory of our city’s heritage and are avid storytellers who enjoy engaging with their guests.

All of our touirst guides live and work in Kuala Lumpur. Several of us previously conducted heritage walks for the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Tourism Selangor Sdn Bhd, and the Klang Municipal Council. Our team includes Jane Rai, the award-winning tourist guide, content writer, speaker and trainer, who has been conducting heritage walks in Kuala Lumpur since 1993.

Our walks are unscripted. We don’t give you a formal presentation. We encourage you to engage in a conversation about our city. We invite you to indulge your curiosity and ask questions about anything that sparks your interest during the walk. You’ll learn a lot, have fun and make new acquaintances at the same time.
