Chinatown comprises a book and an exhibition of a selection of black and white photographs of Chinatown, Singapore, taken by photographer Sha Ying from 1995 to 2002. The photos have documented the changes of the landscape of Chinatown due to urbanisation and how the people and spaces have been greatly affected by social development.Through this project, Sha Ying hopes to share his observations, reflections and even rare insights of what he had seen and photographed of Chinatown of a past era. This project also hopes to create more awareness of the importance of recording our memories and our past through visual documentation so as to provide a historical reference for the future generations.Join in the curated photo walks with Sha Ying as he traces his footprints back to Chinatown, and capture images that tell a story with your camera. There will also be a series of artist talks dedicated to sharing stories through the lens of Sha Ying’s photography, and on why he has embarked on this project to record a part of our history. Learn about the challenges in printing, types of papers and printers, and different approaches of printing an image, at our workshops by digital printing expert Kwa Boon Kee and Sha Ying.About Sha YingSha Ying has been active in the local photography scene since moving to Singapore in 1995.
