This is a BBC micro:bit.

micro:bit

It's a "pocket-sized micro-computer" designed by BBC for computer education in the UK that allows kids to create super cool inventions.

Kids are introduced to an easy to use block editor, to create their own...

A Handheld Game that times how fast your reaction is!

Kids learn not only to code, but to apply their new found programming superpowers on a variety of real world projects. This all culminates in an unstructured problem solving case where, with a'lil creativity & good ol' elbow grease, kids help their teacher design & invent solutions to solve common problems a teacher always faces.

Oh! The Stuff you'll learn!

Pedagogy

No lectures. No memorisation. No ONE right answer. Like real life, we're all about trying things out, failing, figuring what went wrong & trying again. These are the skills & mindset that will last a lifetime. Let's get kids to learn how to learn.
Because the kids who learn to learn become curious, inventive, resourceful human beings who solve real world problems to make meaningful impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. My child is new to computers & programming. Will he/she be able to follow?

The micro:bit Block Editor is perfect for beginners because the visual interface helps kids to understand programming concepts without the hassle and distraction of typing & learning the “right words” to type.

2. My child is younger than 7. Can he/she join?

The micro:bit with Block Editor workshop is recommended for 7-13 year olds. If your child is below 7, please check out Tiny Techies (with BeeBot and Scratch Junior).

3. My child is in the range of ages 10-13. Should he/she join the microPython or Block Editor workshops?

If your child is completely new to programming or is not proficient in the use of the keyboard, we recommend Block Editor as it would ease him/her into the idea of programming.
If your child is confident in using the keyboard to type code, microPython.

4. I’ve enrolled my child, what will he/she need to bring?

We’ll provide all equipment and materials, but you may want to bring a jacket and light snacks in case he/she gets hungry. If your child is joining the full day camp, we recommend bringing packed lunches.

5. Will my child be able to bring his / her projects home?

You’ll get to take home your micro:bit essentials kit (which includes a micro:bit, microB USB cable for power/programming and 2 x AAA battery holder for mobile power). You can also take home your code files so that you can re-load your projects onto your micro:bit once you’re home! There’s a tonne of stuff you can build with your micro:bit, stuff you can find around the house and your creativity! We’ll be doing some projects in class where we’ll use additional components and materials - e.g. the micro:bit car. If you want to take home your micro:bit car kit, ask the teacher at the end of class and you can purchase a kit on the last day.

Some kids like to take their code home every day, in which case you can bring a thumb drive to save your projects. But it’s not essential, as we’ll email you your code files at the end of the course.
