Comfort Women is a subject not openly discussed in Singapore. But it is a well-known (and well-spoken) subject in some countries like South Korea and elsewhere. In Singapore, this subject may well be a taboo – but, really, it isn’t.
It happened right here in Singapore too – From Teo Hong Road, all the way to Jalan Jurong Kechil - and all the way down to Pulau Blakang Mati. It even happened smack in the middle of Orchard Road – at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road. “Sook Ching” is a term well-taught in schools, but “comfort women” is hardly ever mentioned. Even “infant massacre” receives more exposure – especially on Battle of Singapore tours.
As time rages on, most comfort women are passing on. Indeed, most comfort women have passed on! The world has barely but a few of these aging ladies left. In order that we may learn, it is important that we remember these dark days.
Our tour today will focus on what happened here at Emerald Hill and Cairnhill Road. On our tour, we’ll pay our respect to the late Kim Bok-Dong who once worked as a “comfort woman” right here in Singapore. See the video here.
Meet me at 9am, 3rd May 2025 (Saturday), Somerset MRT. Upon exiting, keep left and meet me near the Citibank ATM. This tour will end at one of the former “comfort houses” (where soldiers used to take their turn at the comfort women). It may sound sinister – it was…
