CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW
Overview
This panel brings together leading experts to examine some of the most pressing questions in international humanitarian law (IHL) today.
Professor Jeffrey Chan S.C. will address the importance and impact of IHL for small states and focus on the importance of respect for the rules of IHL and the importance of the voices of small states in ensuring that every nation respects IHL in their military planning and operations.
Professor Cheah Wui Ling will speak on historical examples of IHL implementation in Singapore and the region with the aim of demonstrating its historical and continued present-day relevance.
Professor Marina Sharpe will discuss the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by armed conflict, outlining the IHL framework, recent interpretive developments, and the areas where significant debate remains.
Together, the panellists will shed light on how IHL is evolving in response to contemporary challenges and what this means for states, humanitarian actors, and affected populations.
