Event description

Description

Join us on 2nd September where we will share what it takes to care for someone with dementia at a young age. Registration starts at 9:00am.

Young Onset Dementia, a term given to those diagnosed with dementia below the age of 65, is undeniably real and it could happen, but to who?

The answer is you, your parents, your spouse, your neighbour and the list could go on.

The term 'dementia' is constantly associated with grey-haired elderly so often that we are almost certain that people 65 and below are too young to be diagnosed with the 'disease of the old'. While dementia has been predominantly associated with seniors, the condition knows no boundaries, age or nationality.

A fact that resounded clearly with Kate Swaffer, who received this shocking news at age 49 and was saddled with advice to begin preparations for her end of life issues. Almost a decade later, she broke grounds by becoming the first person with dementia to give a keynote speech at a United Nations World Health Organisation event.

At 58, she currently helms the Dementia Alliance International as Chair and Chief Executive and pursues her passion as an academic, activist, author, blogger and poet. Kate continues to champion conversations about critical issues impacting Persons with Dementia and their loved ones.

Joining us on that day would be Dr Philip Yap (Director, Geriatric Centre, Senior Consultant, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital) and Ms. Eveline Silva (Senior Psychologist, National Neuroscience Institute) who would share more about the challenges faced by those with Young Onset Dementia and how we can better support them.

In the afternoon, Ms. Melissa Chan, founder of Project We Forgot, a community network for young caregivers to persons with dementia, will share her caregiving experience, followed by the personal sharing by persons with dementia and their caregivers.
