Event description

Description

Drawing on the practices of posture (Asana) and mindfulness (Dhyana) in the Hatha-Yoga tradition, this workshop will construct somatic pathways for the body-mind through modulations of breath and gaze, and through ideas of inhabiting shape and isolating movements. Through these pathways the practitioner will be guided into a notion of 'form' as drawn from the Odissi and Javanese dance traditions, culminating in dance improvisations.

OTHER INFORMATION

ELEMENT Artist-in-residence, Kiran Kumar, will be drawing a close to his 6-month residency at Dance Nucleus. His research during this period has centred around the somatic practices of Hatha-Yoga, Odissi and traditional Javanese dance, particularly on their proposals for subtle dancing. He will be presenting his residency research at Dance Nucleus through an essay-performance and a somatic workshop designed for participants ranging from beginners to dance professionals.

In conjunction with Centre 42's The Vault programme, the outcome of Kiran's aesthetic and critical investigations into subtle dancing will be presented as four configurations of movement, text and image: a workshop, an essay-performance, an audio-installation and an exhibition. Together, the four configurations may be seen as a curatorial experiment in presenting dance beyond the frame of performance.

ABOUT ELEMENT

ELEMENT is Dance Nucleus' artist-in-residence programme focusing on movement and choreographic research practice. It supports rigorous discourse, research and wide-ranging experimentation in all movement-based forms, so as to nurture new movement and choreographic expression.

This programme focuses primarily on a research-based discourse without the pressure of developing and creating a new work. Other than offering extensive time and space to research, explore and experiment, ELEMENT also provides financial, artistic and logistical support and advice.

ELEMENT is Dance Nucleus’ commitment to enable and encourage artists to engage in an inquisitive research process to define and refine their artistic practice without having to create a work, thereby re-interrogating the way local artists work.
