Understanding The Peranakan Culture: Once you step into the Straits Enclave, it is like taking a step back in time into a different time dimension – 100 years back into a 1920s Peranakan home when these architecturally stunning shophouses were constructed in Joo Chiat. Guests are welcomed by a captivating ambience, followed by a feast for their eyes where they will be tickled with stories behind them. The place provides fascinating insights into the development of this unique culture and heritage that infuses Colonial, Chinese and Malay influences into their living spaces, furniture, deco, art, tapestry, kitchen wares, dressing, and more. Angeline will share the Peranakan culture and interesting stories as a Peranakan staying in the Joo Chiat district.
The Art of Peranakan Bead and Needle Work: Create your own Beaded Artwork (using basic technique of making Kasut Manek). Learn about the origins and intricate craft forms of Nyonya beadwork and embroidery where one can find them in decorations for everyday Peranakan personal items, as well as more ornamental pieces for special occasions. Learn the traditional stitching technique and create your personal artwork using beautiful beads, and tools that are provided. Angeline will guide you along and make sure you bring home a book-mark to be proud. Don’t forget to bring along your glasses/contact lenses!
Authentic Lunch & Afternoon Tea: A visit to a Nyonya home is never complete without a hearty meal. Taste Singapore's popular local cuisine for lunch and enjoy Peranakan Kuehs (cakes) and special brew teas for afternoon tea.
Guests can stay on after workshop to perfect their masterpiece or just gossip over tea with new friends. After all, (one of) Straits Enclave’s main purpose is to enrich lives, knowledge and memories.
There is so much to experience, learn, see, taste and create! There will never be a dull moment at the Straits Enclave Peranakan Beading Workshop.
