ShanghART Singapore hosts a light and sound performance by artist-musicians Lai Yu Tong, Mark Chua, Lam Li Shuen and Wu Jun Han on the occasion of Lai Yu Tong's first solo exhibition at the gallery, The Dogs.

Inspired by encounters with a pack of stray dogs, Fear & Love explores the nuance of animal-human relationships through storytelling and live image-making. Playing an ensemble of DIY, low-tech light-emitting apparatus and an eclectic mix of sound-emitting instruments, the performers put up a makeshift theatre play, akin to telling stories around a fire.

The production is the first collaboration between the four performers who come from various backgrounds as film-makers, video artists and visual artists but share a common interest in free-improvisation and experimental music, playing separately in bands and solo—Are, Pupa and Cosmologists.

Lai Yu Tong is an artist from Singapore who works across drawing, image-making, sculpture and sound. His practice is interested in creating adequate media to articulate the present, believing in the intrinsic need for humans to make images and tell stories. Recent works of his consider how art can evoke empathy in a world so damaged.

Wu Jun Han thinks and plays with sound (and other things). He is a part of Pupa (noisy ambient-ish electronica) and was formerly a crew member on board the Wayang Spaceship (Ming Wong). His output manifests in different forms—improvisation, cassette tapes, words and gestures. He also frequently contributes to live performances and productions as a musician, VJ and sound designer.

Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen are a Singaporean filmmaker and artist duo who work across film, audiovisual performance, music and installations. Their works explore the intersections of histories, materialities and existential anxieties, through speculative fiction and body horror.
