About the Programme/Event

Have you ever searched for your keys and found them in the refrigerator, or forgot why you walked into a room? Regardless of age, everyone experiences occasional episodes of forgetfulness. Although forgetfulness is one of the signs and symptoms of dementia, dementia is more than just typical forgetfulness. It is the loss of brain function that causes rapid memory loss, impaired cognition (thinking ability), intellectual and physical malfunction, and personality change. According to the Well-being of the Singapore Elderly (WiSE) study led by the Institute of Mental Health in 2015, one in 10 people aged 60 and above may have dementia. This translates to about 82,000 people in 2018 and the number is expected to exceed 100,000 in the near future.

Dementia not only affects one’s memory but also impacts the physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of the individual’s life. However, many do not understand the condition well and are unaware of how they can better support people with dementia and their caregivers.

This talk aims to address the following questions:

  • What is dementia?
  • What is the difference between forgetfulness and dementia?
  • How does dementia affects individuals and their family members?
  • How and where can one seek help?

This programme is suitable for those aged 50 years and above, and organised in collaboration with Monfort Care (Bedok).
