From Shore to Shrine traces the Indian heritage of Chinatown through the footsteps of Tamil Muslim Chulia merchants and Tamil migrants who first came ashore at Telok Ayer. Drawn by maritime trade, the Chulias left a lasting imprint on the neighbourhood through their faith, commerce, and community life.
The walk begins at Al Abrar Mosque, passes Jamae (Chulia) Mosque, and explores how these institutions anchored early migrant communities. The journey concludes at Sri Mariamman Temple, where we uncover firewalking rituals, Tamil traditions, and the temple’s role in cultural coexistence within a Chinese enclave.
