About this Event

About the Programme/Event

Asia is ageing fast, especially in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. Many seniors in these countries are living alone or with their spouse. Gerontechnology is getting pervasive, enabling seniors to live an independent life and equipping caregivers to provide better care for them. Despite the ageing population in Asia, Gerontechnology is a sunrise industry with many opportunities especially for start-ups. We are very honoured to have speakers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan to share about the Gerontechnology landscape, opportunities, and start-up experiences in their respective countries.

About the speaker

Prof. Hsu Yeh-Liang, Director, Gerontechnology Research Center, Yuan Ze University & Chief Executive Officer, Seda-Gtech Co. Ltd.

Prof. Hsu received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University and was conferred PhD by Stanford University in 1992. He then became a professor at Yuan Ze University, Taiwan, where he has had many important roles, including Secretary General and Dean of Academic Affairs. Prof. Hsu directed his research interest in design to gerontechnology and established the Gerontechnology Research Center in 2003, which is the pioneering research institute in this field in Taiwan. He has published many papers, books and patents in gerontechnology. Prof. Hsu has been actively involved in the International Society for Gerontechnology (ISG). He has chaired the 9th World Conference of Gerontechnology and is concurrently Editor-in-Chief for “Gerontechnology” and IT Director of ISG. In 2016, Prof. Hsu founded Seda GTech Co. Ltd. Working with 8 young cofounders who were his students, he has been pushing gerontechnology research into real products for daily applications by older adults and caregivers.

Dr. Kelvin Tan, Senior Lecturer, SUSS

Dr. Tan is co-founder of Eyemail Technology Inc which started in 2004. The company provides consultancy services for technology and innovation programmes in media, entertainment, healthcare and travel industries. He is also a partner in Yincubator which provides consultancy to overseas technology companies establishing innovation hubs in South East Asia. For advisory roles, he is involved with One&Co of Japan JR Rail, Taiwan Tech Arena and People’s Association of Spore for community projects. In his 7 years with NUS Enterprise for entrepreneurship programs, Dr. Tan has led the team portfolio/investment managers in overseeing the NUS invested startups. He set up the Corporate Partnerships team to spearhead open innovation and transformation initiatives with government agencies, corporates and startups. The team developed accelerator initiatives with corporates to embed innovations from the startup and research communities into their transformation roadmap.

Mr. Samuel Hui, Co-founder & Chief Executive Officer, Automation for Humanity

Mr. Hui is a Co-founder and CEO of Automation for Humanity (AFH), a start-up from Hong Kong developing automated caregiving devices to lessen the reliance on caregiving labour and reduce caregiving costs. At AFH, they believe that if labour is insufficient or costly, then the only substitute is machines (i.e., robots or automation). Covid-19 has also highlighted another weakness in the current caregiving – the need for social distancing in the face of recurring viruses. Their first product is the award-winning Sit & Shower device, an automatic bathing device that is available in Hong Kong, Sweden, Singapore and Israel. AFH is also working on automating the patient handling process with automatic bed-to-wheelchair transfer devices (removing the necessity of an in-person caregiver to assist) under development.

Mr. Tan Lee Tuan, Founder, Bekind Solutions Pte Ltd

In his pursuit of a purpose driven life, Mr. Tan set up Bekind Solutions to inject vibrancy into the life of the elderly. He had experience working with people and cultures from more than 40 over countries. Given his vast exposure, he wants to harness his global experience and integrate his Design, Engineering and Marketing know-how to develop innovative products to improve the quality of life for the elderly. He and his collections of Agegracefully Smart Walking Sticks had won Eldercare Innovation Award 2018, Singapore Good Design Award 2019 and German Design Award 2020.

The speakers will be accompanied by a senior representative from Japan External Trade Organisation.
