An Insight into Singapore’s Publishing Scene

Between the Lines - An Insight into Singapore’s Publishing Scene is a series of talks with local publishers.

<h2>Synopsis</h2><p>This session is designed for emerging writers and translators navigating the publishing landscape. The discussion will explore how to select works for translation, craft effective pitch packages, and develop strategies for approaching publishers and agents. </p><p>Tung Roh Suan will offer practical advice on alternative publishing avenues, including self-publishing, and provide insights on budgeting, securing author permissions, and managing the financial aspects of self-publishing.</p><p>Learn about:</p><ul><li>Choosing translation projects: balancing personal interest with market demand</li><li>Structuring a compelling pitch package</li><li>Determining the right amount of translation to include in pitches</li><li>Identifying where to pitch: publishers, journals, and agents</li><li>Solo vs. anthology work: benefits, challenges, and collaboration opportunities</li><li>Exploring alternative publishing options, including self-publishing</li><li>Financial planning and publishing on a budget</li><li>Legal steps for securing permissions</li></ul><p>Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions on all aspects of translation, publishing, and self-publishing.</p>

<h2>About the Speaker:</h2><p>Tung Roh Suan is Editor-in-Chief of Balestier Press, an independent publisher specialising in world literature and translations from Asia.</p>

<h2>Cancellation:</h2><p>The programme can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the programme date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.</p><p>Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us up to 5 working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Those who did not turn up at the workshop will not receive a refund.</p><p>Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation and withdrawal policy and accept the terms contained therein.</p>
