The 2-day Gottman Seven Principles Program draws on over 40 years of evidence-based research by Dr John Gottman who revolutionised the study of couple relationships using rigorous scientific methods to observe the behaviours of couples over many years. It is based on The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work book that summarises this research to guide couples on the path toward a harmonious and long-lasting relationship. It is the definitive guide for anyone who wants their relationship to attain its highest potential. It will help couples in deepening the friendship foundation of their relationship, managing conflict successfully, honouring each other’s dreams and creating shared meaning.

The program is suitable for couples who are engaged or contemplating marriage, through to couples who have been together for a lifetime and desire to deepen and enhance their relationship. Research shows that couples often wait several years from the time they identify problems in their relationship until they seek professional counselling help. By then problems deepen, opposing positions become more entrenched, feelings become deeply hurt and the task of recovery is much greater. In addition, only about a third of the couples who divorced actually seek any type of counselling or therapy.

This Gottman Seven Principles Program aims to provide couples with the evidence-based practical tools and skills to enhance their marital relationship in a psycho-educational context. It is not intended to take the place of professional couple therapy for those undergoing severe relationship distress or serious emotional or mental health problems. While the program is not a substitute for therapy, it can soften the entry into working on the couple relationship and getting referral help if necessary without the stigma that some still have towards seeking therapy. The class format encourages both partners to work on their relationship rather than one partner alone reading the book without the other partner’s participation.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Class.

1. Will we have to share our personal problems and issues with the class? Answer: No. The class does not require the sharing of personal problems and issues publicly. Couple’s exercises are done privately.

2. Must both partners attend or can I come alone? Answer: Since the class involves couples doing exercises together, both partners must attend to participate.

3. My partner is not a reader. Can we still come to the class if he/she do not want to read the book? Answer: While the book provides a valuable reference, the class facilitator will summarise the content of the book and hence perfect for couples who wants to get through the principles quickly and do the exercises together as a couple under guidance in class.

4. What can we expect to learn from the program? Answer: The couple will learn the principles and activities to strengthen their relationship in a variety of ways including deepening their love maps, fostering fondness and admiration, facilitating turning towards each other, accepting each other’s influence, solving solvable problems, overcoming gridlock and creating shared meaning.
