About this event

The Chinese Theatre Circle was established in 1981 and used to be located at the former Telok Ayer Primary School. The moved to their current location on Smith Street as part of NAC and STB’s plans to have a cultural street on Smith Street.

One of the members See Too Hoi Siang is perhaps the only homegrown artist who has mastered the two aspects of Cantonese Opera – Civilian and Military-type roles – with equal competence. She was awarded The Outstanding Young Person In the World Award for Cultural Achievement in 2001, an award which has been presented to Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau and Jackie Chan.

Today, the CTC experiments with various new ideas and concepts in their newer productions, such as staging a traditional opera in English or Malay, trying out different combinations of instrumentation, putting on different makeup or altering the way they sing, in order to connect with the younger population and keep Cantonese opera fresh and relevant.
