Distinguish Speaker: Professor Andrew Thatcher

Andrew Thatcher is Professor and Chair of industrial/organisational psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is currently President of the International Ergonomics Association (2024-2027) and previously served as the IEA’s Future of Work Committee Chair (2021-2024). He is currently Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal ‘Ergonomics’ and was previously a handling editor from 2016 to 2024.


Andrew helped establish the HFES Sustainability TG and served three terms as the Chair of the HFES Social Impact Committee. His research focuses on sustainability and implementing nature-based solutions in poor communities for which he received the NSTF/South32 Green Economy Award. He is also a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.


Seminar Synopsis

Sustainability and climate change are some of the greatest challenges facing humanity in the 21st Century. In this talk, Andrew will address the various roles that human factors and ergonomics can play in addressing these challenges. This includes the importance of human-centred design, affective design, and usability experience.


Andrew will also discuss how the rise of AI intersects with sustainability and climate change challenges and how human factors and ergonomics must help find solutions.
