Singapore is internationally recognised as a wealthy, developed country, but there’s been a growing awareness locally of the fact that inequality is increasingly a problem in our society. While there’s no official poverty line in Singapore, an estimated 10–14% of Singaporeans face severe financial difficulties and have problems meeting basic needs.Discussions around inequality and poverty in Singapore have played out online and off, in the mainstream media and on social media. Some say that it’s a matter of hard work and financial literacy, so that people can be self-reliant and not rely on hand-outs.
