Objective Goal:

To give an overview of some basic understand about jade with hands-on experience.

Course Outlines:

a. Introduction – brief history of jade in various culture

b. What is jade?

c. Chemical and physical properties of jadeite and nephrite

d. Sources of jadeite and nephrite

e. Mining of jadeite-jade in Burma

f. Order of rarity of jade among other gemstones

g. Treatment of jadeite-jade – B-jade, B+C-jade and C-jade.

h. Discuss testing methods e.g. infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope

i. Basic testing of jade imitations using loupe, refractometer and prism spectroscopy.

Learning Outcomes:

To appreciate the jade i.e. nephrite-jade and jadeite-jade, its occurrence and mining. Student will have the opportunity to handle and use 10x loupe to identify jade and observe natural one from the treated materials and some jade imitations.
