Do I need to pay for food and drinks?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Meetups are in groups of 10-12 people. The final bill (including a standardized % tip) will be split equally amongst all the attendees. The average spend per person is $50-$90. There is a small admin fee for attendance.

Do I need to bring anything for this event?

Accepted Answer

Brings lots of positive energy, courage and an open mind! Make new friends, have fun and practice speaking in the other language :)

Question 3

Will there be a balanced ratio of English and Japanese speakers?

Accepted Answer

Your host will do her very best to ensure there is a good ratio of English and Japanese speakers so that everyone has the opportunity to practice. In the event where there is an imbalance, your host will reach out to your for alternatives.

Question 4

What if there are less than 10 people that signed up for the event?

Accepted Answer

We will still strive to aim to have as many people as possible . You will still get the opportunity to practice both English and Japanese. We have some local Canadians who speak both languages too!

Question 5

What if I am unable to attend at the last minute?

Accepted Answer

It will be greatly appreciated if you turn up for the day you signed up for as it will impact the other attendees. In the event that you are certain you cannot make it for the event, please reach out to the host.

Question 6

Do you offer refunds?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, there are many instances of no-shows and this hurts the meetup group as I keep the group smaller. Therefore, I do not offer a refund policy for this small fee. Please only sign-up for this event if you are extremely keen in participating in a language exchange.

Question 7

What level of Japanese or English level do I need to have?

Accepted Answer

The meetup is open to all individuals with or without experience in the Japanese or English language. However, it might be helpful to have some basic understanding such as greetings that may be helpful to converse and learn new words, phrases and sentences.

Question 8

Why is this event held in an izakaya?

Accepted Answer

In Japanese culture, most individuals spend time in casual settings to converse and have fun with each other. It allows individuals to bond over food and drinks. The izakaya can get a little loud sometimes so if you are not comfortable in such a setting, please refrain from attending.

Question 9

Do I have to stay for the entire event?

Accepted Answer

You are not obligated to stay for the entire event if you feel uncomfortable. However, you will still be subjected to paying 50% of your individual bill if you leave 30mins to 1hour after the event has started. If you did not consume any food or drinks, please approach the host.
