Benshi performer: Kumiko Omori

Kumiko Omori is active in film festivals both inside and outside of Japan, as well as silent film screenings and variety theatres. In 2019 she performed at "The Art of the Benshi" held in Los Angeles, where she received a standing ovation. She also works as a media personality and a narrator. Her performance has a reputation for a wide range of characters from a middle aged man to a pure young girl.

Pianist: Haruka Amamiya

As one of only a few silent film pianists in Japan, Haruka Amamiya, originally from and trained in Kobe where "The Golden Bullet" was shot, is actively taking part in film festivals and screenings. Her improvisation style is highly renowned for a wide range of genres from comedy to serious drama.

Virtual Film Screening accompanied by a talk with Noriko Tanaka (Manager, Kobe Planet Film Archive)

Born in Osaka, after working as a film festival programmer and film projectionist, Noriko Tanaka became the founding manager of Kobe Planet Film Archive in 2007. As well as programming for Planet's theater, she works as a member of the Kobe Film Archive Organizing Committee and runs the Kobe Discovery Film Festival. She is also involved in resident-participation style film archiving. From 2019, together with director Yoshio Yasui, she guided Planet to becoming a non-profit organisation to research, study and give access to the archival collection.

Benshi and the culture of live narration for visual arts in Asia

Lecturer: Ichiro Kataoka, a benshi/katsuben performer

Since becoming an apprentice of Sawato Midori in 2002, Kataoka has performed for about 350 titles in 18 different countries. He starred in "Spring Snow'' (2005) directed by Yukisada Isao and NHK's historical TV drama "Idaten" (2019). For "Katsuben!" (2019) directed by Masayuki Suo, which featured the silent cinema era in Japan, he not only played the role but trained other actors and provided historical background for accuracy. In 2020, he published a book "History of Katsuben". He has also discovered lost films such as "Chushingura" (1910) and "Our Pet" (1924).

The lecture will be in Japanese with English, Indonesian, and Thai interpreters.
