ABOUT SUEH LI

Sueh Li, a talented type designer from Penang, Malaysia, and the founder and driving force behind hrftype, a type foundry dedicated to custom font development and multi-script typography.

After completing the prestigious Type and Media Master program at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, Sueh Li began exploring local identity through the art of typography and type design. Her versatile portfolio spans custom typefaces for branding, curating typographic exhibitions, and crafting multilingual type in non-Latin scripts.

Her work explores cultural identity and draws inspiration from everyday street lettering. Beyond her design work, Sueh Li is also the founder of Huruf, a Malaysian type collective dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation for typography and type design in the region.

A true advocate for cultural storytelling through type, Sueh Li continues to push the boundaries of design in Southeast Asia and beyond.

DESIGNING VOICES, SHAPING IDENTITY

In Designing Voices, Shaping Identity, type designer Sueh Li shares her journey of developing typefaces within Malaysia’s multilingual and multicultural landscape. As the founder of hrftype and initiator of the huruf collective, Sueh reflects on how type design can express voice, locality, and cultural nuance. From designing fonts for major brands like Grab and AirAsia to drawing inspiration from everyday street lettering, she explores the challenges and opportunities of multi-script typography in Southeast Asia.

ABOUT LETTERLOVE BY TYPE DESIGN ASIA

LETTERLOVE is a series of international typography lectures that was founded in 2016 by Mark and Sarah De Winne, and has previously featured Christian Schwartz (US), Jean-Francois Porchez (FR), Joe Chang (TW), Alexandre Saumier Demers (CA) and James Edmondson (US) in a physical lecture setting in Singapore. Post-Covid, we are bring our beloved typography lectures to the rest of the world via online webinars, especially catered to Asian designers in GMT+8 timings, under the newly established Type Design Asia.

TYPE DESIGN ASIA is a community of type lovers and type design enthusiasts who come together to learn, grow, and share their passion for typography, with monthly community calls, typography resources and special access to Letterlove events all included in the monthly membership.
