Abstract

The IMO’s MEPC 83 (April 2025) has approved mid-term GHG measures, including a binding fuel-GHG standard and a global emissions-pricing mechanism, with adoption expected later this year and entry into force in 2027. These measures tighten well-to-wake performance requirements and expand methane oversight, raising the compliance bar for all future fuels. Against this backdrop, LNG remains the most mature and scalable solution available today, delivering up to 23% well-to-wake GHG reductions versus conventional marine fuels while ensuring compliance with air-quality regulations. Importantly, LNG infrastructure and ship technology provide a seamless pathway to net zero—through the use of Bio-Methane, already available in several ports and synthetic LNG (Green-LNG) trials already underway. The global LNG bunkering network continues to expand, with more than 180 ports offering LNG bunkering and over 60 dedicated LNG bunker vessels in operation, supported by further port upgrades and new vessel orders. This infrastructure growth is driven by a resilient orderbook of LNG-fuelled ships, particularly in the container segment and PCTC, reinforcing LNG’s role as the best compliance-ready and future-proof solution for the industry. The webinar will cover all above topics and also discuss practical application of LNG as fuel for shipping.
