How do I decide what targets to set? What’s the difference between targets and KPIs? How do I ensure that my strategy is implemented effectively? Can sustainability return profits?

The business case for sustainable SMEs could not be greater. The health crisis has exposed glaring gaps in business continuity, supply-chain integrity, employee protection and more. Cognisant of the fact that sustainability can be overwhelming for the SMEs, UNGCMYB created The MAJU Framework to help SMEs identify and leverage sustainability as a source for growth and adapt to globalisation.

Through the use of the MAJU Framework, its various tools and guides, we’ve made it easy to take your first step by helping make meaning, investigate, create, implement and improve your sustainability journey.

The MAJU Series workshop is broken up into three separate sessions. Be sure to sign up for all the sessions to get a complete view of the MAJU Framework for SME Sustainability.

MAJU SERIES 1, PART 1: MISSION. Sets the business foundation for helping to realise sustainability aspirations by grounding Business Purpose, Governance, and Strategy & Goals through selected management methodologies that align to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Part 1 of the MISSION component, learn how to complete the following tools that form the foundation of any good sustainability strategy.

Sustainability SWOT analysis

The Sustainability Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats analysis (SusSWOT) is designed to help you drive action and collaboration on environmental and social challenges, identifying business risks and creating opportunities. With good use of this framework an enterprise will be able to better assess and project sustainability plans, thus improving efficiency and effectiveness. Use the SusSWOT to motivate your Bosses or work mates to consider opportunities to invest, innovate, and collaborate on environmental or social challenges in ways that increase business value.

SME Materiality Matrix

Changes take place in the blink of an eye. Investors, customers and employees have evolving expectations that must be met. Failure to observe this will result in loss of business and investors over the longer term. That is why Materiality Assessment is vital in business sustainability and together with the SusSWOT it helps form the basic foundation for good sustainability practice. Materiality is the process which supports a business to determine the relative importance of Social, Environmental and Economic issues. It concerns collecting evidence to enable a business to make informed decisions so that resources are spent on material issues of strategic importance, rather than all at once, just like the SDGs.

This session is part of the SME SDG Festival (SSF21) that runs form 8 – 12 November 2021. SSF21 is a forward-thinking and dynamic Small Medium Enterprise (SME) event focusing on enabling Malaysian enterprises to rebuild better in the new operating landscape – carbon neutral and resilient (sustainable) economy.

SSF21 features a 1-day conference along with 5 days of intense learning and development workshops tailored to meet the current needs of SMEs to assist them in building ESG competencies in business practice. As the SSF21 plays an important role in the larger agenda to transform and invigorate the local SME ecosystem, tickets to the weeklong SSF21 are entirely free of any admission charge - thanks to our supporting organisation and trainers whom have done so on a pro bono basis.
