Description
A programme of Singapore Design Week 2019.
Whether or not we recognise it, our actions and choices are influenced by our own perspectives and the perspectives of others. As creatives, how can we use design or artistry to challenge these perspectives? How can our craft help us create new ones?
An informal talk by two creative entrepreneurs, sharing their experiences and their perspectives, and culminating in a panel discussion between two.
You are also invited to visit the studios where the creatives work ‐ and interact first‐hand with them and their work.
Perspectives: Screw It!

Perhaps we tend to see things within an invisible frame put onto us by the society we live in. This happens when we shut our ears and minds off and instead focus on the ‘rights' and the ‘wrongs’. Many of us then live out our lives stuck within this frame. It is time to screw these perceptions!
Woodworking has traditionally been seen as a masculine craft ‐ but Lyn thinks otherwise. Can a man not work on delicate products and a woman not on challenging projects?
Through her choice of woodworking as a medium, she challenges this social norm and breaks free to embark on a less‐trodden path of artistry and take on her identity as a creative entrepreneur.

About Lyn
If you are passionate about what you are doing, you will eventually find the time and effort to make it happen."
With this line, Lyn left her marketing job in pursuit of her passion for woodworking. She took up a 6 months woodworking school in Taiwan and became an apprentice at a local upcycling studio where she learnt that numerous pieces of wood are discarded, forgotten, and wasted along the production line.
This inspired her to conceptualize affordable and sustainable jewelry and bags for modern women as well as teaching woodworking workshops for enthusiasts.

Concrete Artist
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone talks about concrete? It’s solid? It’s used mostly for construction? It is easy to see things at a superficial level but what if we take the time to understand that we can change the way we view things? This is what Vanessa wants to drill in to the minds of people around
her.
In other words, changing perspectives.
How can one, really? Vanessa explores this topic as she talks about her experiences in working on concrete ‐ including using it as a vehicle to help high risk youths change their own perspectives of themselves.
About Vanessa
Having been in the finance industry for 5 years, Vanessa decided to leave in search of her passion in life. That was when she chanced upon the idea of crafting with concrete, and after a first project, her passion grew from there. She loves how working with concrete allows her to explore her artistic side, and feels that concrete is an under‐explored medium. As a creative entrepreneur, through one workshop at a time, she wants to show people how versatile and interesting it is as a material.
