ABOUT THE PRACTITIONER
Neil Chua is a ground-breaking ruan instrumentalist and the first musician from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to earn a Master’s Degree in Music – Ruan. With a deep passion for bridging traditions, he has redefined how the ruan is perceived in contemporary and cross-cultural music.
His artistry led him to OneBeat 2014, a prestigious international music exchange program by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, where he introduced the ruan to a global audience of musicians and students. His dedication to cultural dialogue also earned him a place at Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Global Musicians Workshop, where he collaborated with world-class artists, exploring new ways to merge traditions and expand the expressive potential of the ruan.
A champion of traditional arts, Neil was appointed as Singapore’s first artist-in-residence at the National Arts Council’s Stamford Arts Centre Traditional Arts Residency Programme, where he developed innovative projects integrating music, heritage, and community engagement. His deep belief in the power of traditional arts led him to establish RuanAtWorkz Musical Arts (R.A.W.), a registered charity dedicated to preserving and evolving traditional music and cultural expressions. Through R.A.W., Neil fosters education, artistic collaborations, and community outreach to keep traditional music relevant in modern society.
Beyond performance and education, Neil is a certified singing bowl practitioner, incorporating the therapeutic sounds of singing bowls into his artistic and wellness practices. His work continues to inspire, demonstrating how tradition and innovation can harmoniously coexist in today’s globalized world.
