Event description
Fancy painting a lantern or being part of a lion dance ensemble? Pick up some nifty skills from our country’s beloved practitioners.

About this Event

Remember those traditional joss sticks makers, rangoli artists and lion dance troupe members? Despite rising competition, many intangible cultural heritage practitioners remain passionate about their craft. Meet My Craftsman brings Singaporeans to visit nine of these craftsmen, and at the same time, have their hands at practicing them!

What is BeeAmazed?

What’s the buzz? Well a little birdie told us that Yishun is home to a beekeeping farm run by its resident beekeeper - John Chong, a former vice-principal! Be prepared to learn some tips and tricks of the trade at the non-commercial farm located at Kampung Kampus.

About the Craftsman

Beekeeper John Chong used to be the vice-principal of MacPherson Primary School until he retired in 2016.

The idea to set up the farm Bee Amazed took root in 2013 after he visited Kampung Kampus. Among other things, Mr Chong had been inspired by the complex’s late founder Tay Lai Hock who was known for his outdoor learning philosophy. Mr Tay’s idea was to encourage Singapore’s youth to build up their resilience and confidence by getting their hands dirty working on farms, in wood workshops and in the kitchen.

As bees are commonly associated with danger, beekeeping is Mr Chong’s way of embracing risk and encouraging students to do the same. Setting up Bee Amazed itself was an exercise in faith and risk-taking, he shared. While feeling his way around the business, he got stung a few times.
