Event description
Fancy painting a lantern or being part of a lion dance ensemble? Pick up some nifty skills from our country’s beloved practitioners.

About this Event

Remember those traditional joss sticks makers, rangoli artists and lion dance troupe members? Despite rising competition, many intangible cultural heritage practitioners remain passionate about their craft. Meet My Craftsman brings Singaporeans to visit nine of these craftsmen, and at the same time, have their hands at practicing them!

About the Craftsman

As someone who loves Chinese heritage, Jimm Wong spends much of his free time reading up on the histories and symbolisms of traditional Chinese art forms and crafts. His fascination with Chinese lanterns in particular began in 2006. Determined to learn more about the craft, Mr Wong began interviewing senior craftsmen from Malaysia, Taiwan and China. He even consulted Singapore’s last traditional lantern practitioners such as Yeo Swee Huat Paper Agency’s resident lantern artist.

The Fuzhou-style lanterns which he specialises in have not been in production or circulation in Singapore since the 1950s, he said. As such, he initially struggled to find the necessary materials and tools to construct them.

Mr Wong has since introduced 3D printing into his workflow and started making lanterns using aluminium which is easier to handle than bamboo. He is active in the heritage scene and offers community workshops for individuals interested to learn more about the craft.
